Bonnie Cashin: Poet of Utility

Two American visionareis, Thomas Edison and Bonnie Cashin, shared the same dictum; IF IT WORKS, ITS BEAUTIFUL. The bags Cashin designed for Coach from 1962 to 1972, live up to that design aesthetic. Brilliantly colored, sturdy, and practical, her shapes make you want to grab them and go – travelling, corporate raiding, or just grocery shopping with elan.

Fascinated by dance and raised playing with silky remnants in her mother’s dressmaking shop. Cashin developed a passion for sensuous, quality materials transposed onto the moving body. Woprking as wardrobe mistress for Broadway shows in the ;30’s , she dressed as a chorus girls. In the ’40’s she designed flamboyand costumes for 20th century Fox, while she herself wore stringently minimal Mao jackets and slim leather. It was a design aesthetic that laid the foundations for American sportswear. Classic shopper bag
